EMPTY SKY:

new jersey's september 11th memorial

Liberty State Park, Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, USA

Nearly 800 New Jerseyans were murdered on September 11, 2001.

Thousands more New Jerseyans have since succumbed to 9/11-related illness.

The Empty Sky Memorial remembers all of New Jersey's victims of the September 11th attacks at the

World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Two acres of sacred ground  honors our loved ones, friends, and neighbors whose lives were tragically cut short, ensuring their legacy live on forever at the state's official September 11th Memorial,

commonly known as the "Empty Sky Memorial."

Positioned in Liberty State Park, directly across the Hudson River from Ground Zero, two stainless-steel walls bisect the Memorial's landscape and stretch toward the place in the Manhattan skyline where the Twin Towers once stood. These walls carry the names of New Jersey’s loved ones who were murdered on September 11, 2001.

Their names inscribed together. Their stories surround us. And above them is the empty sky.

At the northern end of the two-acre site, a separate area has always been designated by the Memorial's designers to be anchored by  a quiet area of reflection. Here a tribute honoring the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness of New Jersey's responders, recovery workers, and survivors many of whom are succumbing to 9-11 related illnesses are to be integrated. This tribute remains unbuilt. Their extraordinary heroism and sacrifice deserves a permanent place of honor and remembrance within these sacred grounds.

It is a promise still waiting to be fulfilled.

Designed by Jessica Jamroz and Frederic Schwartz Architects and selected from 320 entries, the Empty Sky Memorial is more than a 2-acre living memorial to what New Jersey sacrificed. It is a place where families remember, where generations learn, and where all of us are reminded of the lives behind the names.

They were parents and children.

Husbands and wives.

Brothers and sisters.

Friends and neighbors.

They had plans for tomorrow.

September 11th took those tomorrows from them.

We will not let time take their memory.

HELP US FULFILL THE PROMISE.

A memorial does not remember on its own —WE DO.

The Empty Sky Memorial was created so that the New Jerseyans we lost would always have a place where their names could be spoken, their stories remembered, and future generations could understand the magnitude of what September 11th attacks meant to New Jersey.

That promise now belongs to all of us. Your gift helps preserve, restore, and care for Empty Sky so that decades from now, a child can walk on these sacred grounds, reach out and touch a name, look toward the place where the Twin Towers once stood—and understand that these lives mattered.

Every name mattered. Every life mattered. Every story deserves to endure.

Help us preserve Empty Sky.

Remember the lives.

Remember the totality of sacrifice.

Preserve their stories.

KEEP THE PROMISE.

In partnership with The 911 Legacy Foundation, we are committed to raising the funds necessary to complete the Empty Sky Memorial and fulfill the promise made to those New Jerseyans who gave their lives, who answered the call, and the families who carry their memories forward.

Together, we will ensure that this sacred ground is completed with the dignity, honor, and reverence they deserve and that their courage, sacrifice, and legacy will never be forgotten.
